Grease Trap (FOG)

A grease trap is a plumbing device that is used to prevent fats, oils, and grease from clogging the drain pipes in a kitchen. It is typically installed in the drain line between the sink and the main sewage system, and works by trapping grease and other solid materials that might otherwise accumulate in the pipes and cause blockages. Grease traps are commonly used in restaurants, hotels, and other commercial kitchens, but they can also be used in residential settings. They are typically made of metal or plastic, and are designed to be easy to clean and maintain. In order to function effectively, grease traps need to be regularly cleaned and emptied in order to remove the accumulated grease and other materials. If a grease trap becomes clogged or is not properly maintained, it can cause serious problems with the plumbing system, including water backups and sewage spills.

Determine whether you need a grease trap

Some areas have regulations that require restaurants and other commercial kitchens to install grease traps in order to prevent grease from entering the sewage system. If you are unsure whether you need a grease trap, you should contact your local plumbing authority or health department for more information.

Obtain any necessary permits

Depending on your location, you may need to obtain a permit in order to install a grease trap. This may require filling out an application and paying a fee.

Choose a grease trap

There are several different types of grease traps available, and you should choose one that is appropriate for your needs and the size of your kitchen.

Have the grease trap installed

You may need to hire a licensed plumber to install the grease trap, or you may be able to do it yourself if you have the necessary skills and tools.

Obtain final approval

After the grease trap is installed, you may need to have it inspected by the relevant authorities in order to ensure that it has been installed correctly and is in compliance with all relevant regulations.

Maintain the grease trap

In order to ensure that it continues to function properly, you will need to regularly clean and maintain the grease trap, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
